As part of my Midwife Cath series, he is one for you!

Did you know these facts about babies?

1. Their first poo is sterile.
2. The colostrum acts like a laxative and helps them pass the meconium
3. Hiccups means their wind is up
4. Babies are covered with fine hair. It goes slowly.
5. All babies have a red stork mark and the back of their neck. It goes round 18 months
6. Babies can’t see at birth – it’s like they are looking through a lens with Vaseline on it – blurry.
7. Babies are born with bowed legs. They straighten with age.
8. Babies have an extrusion reflex – this prevents them from eating or taking anything hard into their mouth. The reflex presents as his tongue sticking out. That is why so many people say their baby will not take a dummy or a bottle as the body reacts to hard objects. Mother nature just wants the newborn baby to suck. How clever is that!!
9. Babies get cradle cap between their eyebrows and over the fontanelle (soft spot) as we all forget to clean that area. I suggest a gentle massage with warm, wet, face washer at bath time. This prevents the dry skin from building up. Never use oils or soap.
10. When held upright a newborn baby will take steps. As he develops this skill lessons then comes back again by 12 months when the now toddler starts to walk.
